Does the gospel that we are hearing give an exclusive place to grace? Does it send us to God with empty hands that we might receive salvation as a gift? Does it say to us that Christ by his life and death has done it all and that God requires nothing of us? Does it forbid us to try to supplement with our own works the perfectly sufficient work of Christ? If it does not, if it insists that, as well as believing in Christ, we must work to obtain God’s favour by things such as submission to ceremonies,
